For this weeks review, we decided to revisit the Carnegie area to check out a restaurant that caught our eye the last time we were there. Bakn was started by a man’s dream of becoming a chef and owning his own restaurant. That is exactly what Head Chef Randy Tozzie, an Upper Saint Clair Native, did with his concept of Bakn.
Now, with a name like Bakn, there was an expectation of bacon being served at the restaurant. However, we were rather surprised at just how intricately and uniquely the bacon was used to enhance their meals.
This place really is a one-of-a-kind establishment in the sense that it was so unique that it was hard to classify the style. Upon entering, there is a bar with bar seating on the left and small tables and open booths on the middle and right side of the restaurant. The bar serves a variety of mixed drinks such as Martinis, Margaritas, and Bloody Marys. Additionally, they serve bottled beer, draft beers (Craft and Seasonal), and wine either by the glass or the bottle.
What made this place even more interesting was where we sat for the evening.
In the far back of the restaurant is additional seating that has a direct view into the kitchen where all the food is prepared and cooked. We felt this is an awesome feature because we could see our meal being prepared right in front of us!
Overall, the design and decor of the restaurant gives of the impression of a modern style design with an upbeat, yet relaxing atmosphere. Though we knew we were not a home, we still felt comfortable and had fun watching all the culinary creations that Bakn has to offer being made before our eyes.
Speaking of food, let’s talk about what Bakn serves. Bakn serves breakfast, brunch and lunch, as well as dinner options. Most of them have some style of form of bacon incorporated into them. For breakfast, they have the traditional meals such as omlets, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, and french toast.
As for brunch, lunch, and dinner, they have a variety of sandwiches, flatbread, burgers, salads, soups, and dinners to choose from. During our visit, we decided to try their Loaded Fries, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, their Bakn Flatbread, and their Slow Braised Short Ribs.
Their fries were fantastic! They were freshly make to order which meant they were hot and had a light crisp to them. Then, these fries were generously topped with a cheese sauce, bacon, scallions, and a handful of shredded cheddar cheese. They were a great way to start off our Bakn experience.
Now to the entrees, we had decided to try their Bakn Flatbread. This flatbread, which was a personal sized portion, came topped with Applewood Smoked bacon, Peppered bacon, Mozzarella cheese, and Lemon Dressed Arugula.
It was delicious! We watched as one of the cooks tossed the flatbread onto the grill to slightly toast the flatbread. From there, he topped it with the Mozzarella cheese and added the two types of bacon as the cheese began to melt on to the flatbread. Lastly, they topped it with the Lmon Dressed Arugula right before it was served to us.
The flavors were bold and fresh as we could taste each ingredient with every single bite. Additionally, the portion was just the right size that we were satisfied, but not over filled.
A recommendation if you order this; add some of their Loaded fries on top of the flatbread. We tried this and it was fantastic!
Another meal we tried was one of their breakfast items; Slow Braised Short Ribs. This breakfast came with Creamy Parmesan Polenta, Applewood Smoked bacon, and a Sunnyside Egg garnished with diced tomatoes and scallions.
The polenta was flavorful and creamy, the bacon nice and crispy, and the egg was cooked to perfection.
One of the reasons why this meal, and all of their food, was delicious was because everything is made fresh as it is ordered. We had the opportunity to look into the kitchen while we ate and we saw that the only food items that were pre-made were some of the garnishes and toppings such as the sacllions, tomatoes, or lettuce.
The last meal we tried was their Grilled Chicken Sandwich. This meal consisted of a grilled piece of chicken topped with slices of Applewood Smoked Bacon, an Oven Roasted Tomato, Lemon Dressed Arugula, and Basil Aioli; all of which was placed between a lightly toasted bun.
This sandwich was incredible! The chicken was a generous portion that was freshly cooked and was juicy and tender. Then the combination of the bacon, roasted tomato, and other toppings created a unique and enjoyable flavor that added to the deliciousness of the sandwich. Add some fries to the side of this sandwich and it was a fantastic meal that would be great for lunch or dinner.
Lastly, we did try their dessert special for the night which was a Salted Caramel Cheesecake. This dessert came in the small glasses shown above and was topped with fresh cream and caramel sauce. They were a perfect way to cleanse the pallet and top off our evening at Bakn. Now, it is important to note that the desserts are specials so it may not be the same every night.
Overall, our experience at Bakn was a great experience. The food was great, the atmosphere was relaxing and enjoyable, and the design was one-of-a-kind because we were able to see our food being made.
So next time you’re craving some bacon, or just want a freshly made and delicious meal, be sure to head down to Bakn in Carnegie!
